Found this guy today in the front yard, just being a bro. I don’t really know why I’m posting this, but there were a few other spider posts recently. More pics and a video inside. Anyway, tarantulas are cool.

This was supposed to upload in HD but apparently I have no idea how to work YouTube. Gives a good idea of how big this little dude was. One of the healthier looking ones I’ve seen around recently.

I was at a well site near Carrizo Springs back in 2014 and the damn things were everywhere. Only seen them in the wild once before, and that was at my former company’s driver training facility in Kellyville OK.

Outside of San Antonio. You get used to it. Last night one of my dogs tried to eat a scorpion and it didn’t even faze me. Things found in my back yard in the last year: tarantulas, red-headed centipedes, too many scorpions to count, black widows, rattlesnakes, horned lizards, coyotes, foxes, and one bobcat. The worst are the wasps around here. They can be really aggressive and in the summer they hide under everything.

Sounds wonderful.

My grandmother lives in the mountains of North Georgia. Lots of scary scorpions that make it into the house, but that’s about it.

Scorpions are weird... For the most part they aren’t dangerous and are actually good to have around because they eat some pretty big bugs... But they are just creepy. They seems to activate some internal fear in 99% of people just by walking around.

They just look like they’re going to start stinging the shit out of you.

After a while, I got used to seeing them.

Biggest mystery is how one ended up in the dishwasher. Alive. After it was done running.

Nah they eat the other things that bite and sting. A few months ago we caught one in a shoe box then put it in the office of a coworker who hates spiders. I’m surprised I didn’t get in trouble.

Yeah you basically have to cut them in half to kill them. I use a steel framing square to hack them in two in the house.

The ones I deal with are southern devil scorpions, motherfuckers them.

I wouldn’t want to get that close with a steel framing square, haha.

A violent smashing with a book seems to do the trick as well, but a good deal of force is required.

People love to complain about the cold weather we have to deal with up north. The cold isn’t so bad.

I remember one summer visit to my great-grandparents house. When we hit the scrub desert, there were thousands of tarantulas on the highway. I have no idea how many we squished, but I know my grandpa didn’t slow down and didn’t swerve. I was too little to remember how long it took to get his truck clean.

Youtube loves to take its sweet time encoding HD videos - longer if you have a 60FPS video.

Sure seems to. This one looks better now than it did the day I uploaded it but still nowhere near the original file. I think there is something I need to choose when I upload it that I’m missing.

You win some, you lose some, I guess. Some of my SSB videos via the Elgato 60HD capture card ended up having a bit of having some compression artifacts - not enough to bother me but I would like some form of High-definition.
